Women Empowered as Spiritual Leaders

Black women are also drawn to the Black conscious community because they will be welcomed not only as “queens” but also as spiritual leaders. Given some of the real exclusion women have experienced in the church, African spirituality is attractive to many because it easily affords women leadership roles, gives them a voice, and encourages them to use their gifts and passions to serve themselves and others. The freedom and flexibility to practice spirituality outside of the boundaries that are believed to be set by men in the church and not God have been an appeal.

Black women can be initiated into the Yoruba priesthood; instead of being prophetesses in the church, they are reading tarot cards and cowrie shells, communing with ancestors, leading rituals, and engaging in other types of divination. A Maryland group called “Dawtas of the Moon,” open to both men and women, is led by a high priestess who oversees the group and performs the rites.16

It is imperative for the church to provide a biblical apologetic for womanhood, allow women to serve in leadership, hear their voices, receive their gifts for the body’s upbuilding, and affirm Christ’s love for women in Scripture (addressed later in this chapter). This encouragement for the church is not to compete with African spirituality because Black women like these things, but because it is biblical and therefore the right thing to do. Black women should not be leaving the church because they don’t believe there is a place for them due to race or gender.
